About Me
Hi! I'm Joana, and I'm open to take on a Software Engineering role in a commercial setting. I'm positive, resilient, and passionate about learning, solving problems, and tackling challenges.
In 2023, I transitioned from fashion to tech through a Software Engineering bootcamp at General Assembly, where I learned to build full-stack web apps. Since then, I've been contributing to an open-source project through the Women Coding Community, where I now also work as an Evangelist.
My background in design brings a creative edge to my engineering work. I love creating things that inspire and engage, and I'm eager to combine my skills in tech and fashion to make a meaningful impact!
I like keep practicing what I've learned and grow more as an engineer, so I taught myself TypeScript, Material UI, and Jest through personal projects. I had my first hackathon with Huddlehive, took additional courses with Code First Girls, and joined the Cajigo 100 Women in Tech Accelerator Programme.
"Do it scared" is my motto. I have been challenging myself, with my first public speaking experience at the Halfstack 2024 event with Women Coding Community, as well as other online events since.

Experience
Open-Source Contributor - Women Coding Community [ February - Present 2024 ]
Contributing to open-source has provided me with real-world experience where I work with GitHub, create pull requests, and review and comment on others' contributions. It has also helped me develop the skills to break down complex issues into smaller, manageable tasks, while considering how I would structure an issue myself. We have weekly meetings to discuss current issues and share updates on our progress. I also have the opportunity to introduce new team members to our workflow.
Contributing to this open-source project has significantly boosted my confidence in several ways: I've become more comfortable communicating with a team, asking questions, and taking on new challenges.
- Contributed to WCC's public website as part of an active open-source community.
- Built front-end using React and Next.js in Typescript, as well as Material UI.
- Implemented testing with Jest and React Testing Library.
- Improved code standard with exposure to linting tools, code review process.
- Expanded understanding of CI processes, git version control system.
- Collaborated with team members across the development cycle, including early stage designs and deployment
Software Engineering Immersive - General Assembly [ July - October 2023 ]
During my Software Engineering Immersive (SEI) course at GA, I began a transformative journey that pushed me out of my comfort zone. The program was full of challenges and rewarding experiences that not only sharpened my problem-solving skills but also taught me how to research and read documentation effectively. I learned the importance of embracing failure as a stepping stone to growth and the importance of asking for help when needed. It was during this time that my passion for tech truly began.
